How to install Thunar on Ubuntu 13.1

The Thunar file manager is faster than Nautilus (Files).

In order to install Thunar on Ubuntu 13.1;

  • sudo apt-get install thunar
  • sudo apt-get install thunar-archive-plugin
  • sudo apt-get install gnome-icon-theme-full

Note thunar-archive-plugin enables archive management (compression of files).


To configure Thunar; (use classic location bar, use smaller toolbar button sizes, remove text from toolbar buttons, and enable the keyboard shortcut "BackSpace")

  • thunar - view - location selector - toolbar style
  • gedit ~/.gtkrc-2.0
  • add;
    gtk-icon-sizes = "panel-menu=16,16:panel=16,16:gtk-menu=16,16:gtk-large-toolbar=16,16:gtk-small-toolbar=16,16:gtk-button=16,16"
    gtk-toolbar-style=0
    gtk-can-change-accels=1
  • thunar - view - hover mouse over openparent - press backspace - press backspace

Note the keyboard shortcut suggested is especially convenient when used in conjunction with a multiple button mice whose 'back button' is configured as "BackSpace".

How to install Latex / apa6 package on Ubuntu 13.1 and EL6

Ubuntu 13.1


In order to install a working version of Latex on Ubuntu 13.1 with apa6/biblatex compatibility;

  • sudo apt-get install texlive-full (NB this automatically installs texlive texlive-publishers texlive-fonts-recommended texlive-fonts-extra)
  • sudo apt-get remove biber
  • sudo apt-get remove biblatex
  • download biber v.1.8 binary biber-linux_x86_64.tar.gz from SourceForge (http://sourceforge.net/projects/biblatex-biber/)
  • download biblatex v.2.8 source biblatex-2.8a.tds.tgz from SourceForge . (http://sourceforge.net/projects/biblatex/)
  • mkdir tempbiber
  • mkdir tempbiblatex
  • tar -zxvf biber-linux_x86_64.tar.gz -C tempbiber/
  • tar -zxvf biblatex-2.8a.tds.tgz -C tempbiblatex/
  • sudo rsync -azvv tempbiber/ /usr/bin/
  • sudo rsync -azvv tempbiblatex/ /usr/share/texlive/texmf-dist/ 

Ubuntu 14.04


In order to install a working version of Latex on Ubuntu 14.04 with apa6/biblatex compatibility;

  • sudo apt-get install texlive-full biber

To compile a tex document use pdflatex and biber;

  • pdflatex texDocumentName
  • biber texDocumentName
  • pdflatex texDocumentName

EL6


In order to install a working version of Latex on EL6 with apa6/biblatex compatibility;

  • Download texlive-release-2011.el6.noarch.rpm (http://jnovy.fedorapeople.org/texlive/texlive-release-2011.el6.noarch.rpm)
  • rpm -i texlive-release-2011.el6.noarch.rpm
  • yum install texlive-apa6
  • yum install texlive-csquotes
  • yum install texlive-lipsum
  • yum install texlive-apa
  • yum install texlive-biblatex-apa

To compile a tex document use pdflatex and bibtex;

  • pdflatex texDocumentName
  • bibtex texDocumentName
  • pdflatex texDocumentName
